Pitching skills for designers

Can you pitch your design business in just 20 seconds? It’s a skill that every design studio and designer must have. Developing the ability to pitch gives you the edge to win more work and stand out from the pack.

While designers are used to stretching themselves creatively, the process of pitching often stretches them out of their comfort zone. Yet sitting with that unease is vital to building connections and establishing rapport. The simple truth is people buy from people, so pitching is simply an exercise in relationship building.

The ability to pitch successfully is not about being naturally good at sales, negotiation or management – it’s a specific skill that can be learned. With no hard and fast rules, it’s part presentation skills, part psychology and part science.

This masterclass will provide you with the tools you need so you don’t choke in your next pitch meeting. You’ll learn the secret sauce on how to sell a design solution without looking like you’re trying to flog snake oil. You’ll also develop the skills to help clients understand how you solve their problems. We’ll outline a step-by-step process to building a pitch that puts your audience at the centre of proceedings. And you’ll build and present your own pitch in a battle royale to win over your trainers.

Why bother?

Because you want to win clients and keep them long-term

Because you want to run a financially successful business

Because you want to convince clients of your vision for a project

Because you want to demonstrate your unique value

Because you want to influence stakeholder decisions

Why now?

Because now more than ever you need to win accounts

Because you want to persuade clients, stakeholders and prospects about your creative vision

Because you need to survive in the business world

Because you want to present solutions like a ‘problem-solver,’ rather than like a creative

Because you need to interpret the needs of businesses; this workshop will give you the tools to demonstrate that you understand what’s relevant for the client, not you.

What you'll gain

A how to guide to structure your next pitch

An ability to apply the 7 elements of an effective pitch

An understanding of what it takes to get buy in

Tools to get past the fight or flight response

An understanding of the importance of closing a pitch

Serpil and James from Written and Recorded delivered a pitching workshop and practice session at our annual conference on how to articulate the value of what we do, culminating in a big main room pitching extravaganza.

The workshop gave simple tips on how to convince another party of your idea that resonated with our whole team, could be used in any situation and for the whole of our team – from designers to finance to project managers.

‘The Pitch’ was a live gameshow style event that saw them pitching against each other. Serpil is definitely the hostess with the mostest and the afternoon couldn’t have run any better for us.
